Guiding Principles

PROTECT DEMOCRACY

I pledge to fulfill my sworn duty to support and defend the constitutions of my state and of the United States. I will preserve the separation of powers, protect the peaceful transfer of power, and safeguard fair elections. I will ensure that my administration enforces laws impartially and without political bias.

I will support legislation that strengthens election security, expands fair access to voting, and upholds judicial independence.

I will reject any efforts, legislative or otherwise, that subvert democratic norms, undermine checks and balances, restrict fair access to voting, or erode confidence in free and fair elections.

PROTECT FREE AND FAIR ELECTIONS

I will ensure that elections in my state are administered in a secure, transparent, and professional manner — free from interference, intimidation, or manipulation. I will protect the independence of election officials and ensure the accurate counting and certification of ballots.

I will respect lawful election outcomes and will not promote or legitimize claims of election misconduct that are not supported by credible evidence and resolved through established legal processes.

PUT COUNTRY BEFORE PARTY

I will work across party lines to find common ground on issues that matter to the people of my state. I will engage in open dialogue and pursue pragmatic solutions, even when doing so challenges partisan expectations.

I will not allow national party leaders, ideological insiders, or corporate donors to dictate my decisions at the expense of the people of my state.

ENFORCE A CODE OF ETHICS

I will conduct myself — and ensure my administration conducts itself — with honesty, integrity, and accountability. I will enforce and, where needed, improve clear ethical standards for every appointee and agency under my authority.

I will not tolerate corruption, cronyism, or shielding officials from accountability for political convenience.

TELL THE TRUTH

I will use my platform as governor to share accurate, verifiable information. I will strengthen transparency in state government and ensure public communication is grounded in facts.

I will never knowingly spread misinformation or manipulate the truth for political gain.

Serve and Protect the People

PROTECT HUMAN RIGHTS

I will unwaveringly defend the freedoms, dignity, and civil rights of all people in my state — regardless of race, ethnicity, national origin, religion or belief, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, disability, income, or political affiliation.

I will empower state law enforcement agencies under my authority to uphold these commitments and to protect the rights and dignity of every resident.

I will not sign or enforce legislation that enables discrimination, exploits or disadvantages vulnerable populations, restricts civil liberties, or authorizes inhumane treatment by state agencies.

PROTECT EARNED BENEFITS AND SAFETY NETS

I will support and strengthen the commitments my state has made to its residents — including earned benefits for retirees and public employees, as well as essential safety nets that protect people from hardship during times of genuine need.

I will also ensure these programs are managed responsibly, protecting them from misuse, fraud, and abuse.

I will reject measures that weaken these essential services without providing responsible, compassionate alternatives that protect vulnerable populations and preserve long-term sustainability.

INVEST IN FUTURE GENERATIONS

I will fulfill my responsibility to future generations by supporting critical actions that protect their environment, health, and economic future. I will lead efforts to modernize infrastructure, strengthen education, and pursue sustainable growth that improves the long-term prosperity and quality of life in my state.

I will reject policies that sacrifice the security of future generations for the sake of short-term political or financial gains.

PROMOTE PROGRESS THROUGH SCIENCE

I will fully support evidence-based policymaking in my state — particularly in areas of health, technology, and environmental protection. I will ensure that scientific expertise guides my administration’s decisions and that public research institutions remain free from political interference.

I will not tolerate efforts to politicize science, discredit legitimate research, or sideline expert voices in favor of partisan agendas.

IMPLEMENT FAIR IMMIGRATION POLICIES (STATE ROLE)

While immigration law is federal, I will ensure that my state’s role in enforcement is fair, humane, and consistent with constitutional protections. I will support programs that help immigrants lawfully integrate into our communities with dignity and opportunity.

I will support lawful and humane federal efforts to remove individuals who willfully violate U.S. laws and present credible threats to public safety.

I will not allow my state’s resources to be used for dehumanizing mass roundups, indefinite detention without cause, or violations of due process.

Promote Prosperity and Fiscal Responsibility

FOSTER A COMPETITIVE AND RESPONSIBLE ECONOMY

I will support policies that promote innovation, fair competition, and ethical business practices while protecting workers, consumers, and the environment. I will strengthen local economies by supporting small businesses, fair labor standards, and responsible investment in state industries.

I will reject deregulation or subsidies that put profit above the long-term stability and well-being of the people of my state.

BE FISCALLY RESPONSIBLE

I will only approve state budgets that are balanced, transparent, and sustainable. I recognize that fiscal responsibility requires collaboration to maximize government efficiency while meeting the needs of the people.

I will veto budgets that create structural deficits or prioritize political favors over fiscal health.

IMPLEMENT FAIR AND EQUITABLE TAXATION

I will ensure that tax policies in my state are fair, transparent, and sustainable, avoiding systems that disproportionately burden working families while granting special privileges to the wealthy or powerful interests.

I will reject tax policies that shift undue burdens onto working families or shield the wealthy and well-connected from contributing their fair share.

Uphold Civil Freedoms and State Autonomy

DEFEND STATE AUTHORITY AND CONSTITUTIONAL BALANCE

I will defend my state from unauthorized federal actions — including the deployment of military or law enforcement without state consent. I will uphold my state’s authority in elections and districting and resist manipulation by national party insiders.

I will not tolerate efforts by the federal government to infringe on my state’s constitutional powers or the rights of its citizens.

SUPPORT FREE AND INDEPENDENT MEDIA

I will promote government transparency and protect journalists’ access to public information, ensuring accountability to the people of my state.

I will not support efforts to discredit, suppress, or intimidate journalists for political purposes.

ENSURE SAFE CIVIC PARTICIPATION

I will use the authority of my office to ensure safe civic participation in my state — protecting citizens, election workers, journalists, and public servants from threats, intimidation, or violence that undermines democratic freedoms.

I will not tolerate — nor remain silent about — intimidation, coercion, or violence that seeks to silence civic voices or discourage democratic engagement.

PROTECT PRIVACY AND DATA

I will safeguard the privacy and digital rights of my state’s residents. I will ensure state agencies uphold ethical standards for data collection and use, and I will promote cybersecurity protections for individuals and businesses.

I will not allow misuse of personal data, unwarranted surveillance, or censorship by state institutions under my authority.

Personal Commitment

ENSURE QUALIFIED AND PRINCIPLED APPOINTMENTS

I will appoint only those individuals who demonstrate professional qualifications, ethical integrity, and a commitment to democratic values and constitutional rights.

I will not appoint individuals who lack relevant experience, exhibit extremism, or disregard the values embodied in the Purple Pledge.

PRIORITIZE PRINCIPLE OVER PARTY

I pledge to uphold the values of the Purple Pledge in all of my decisions as governor, even when doing so conflicts with party priorities or risks political cost.

I will not compromise my commitment to truth, fairness, and the public good for partisan loyalty or personal advantage.

By signing the Purple Pledge for Governors, I commit to these principles. I understand that my oath of office is to the people of my state and to the constitutions of both state and nation — not to any party, donor, or insider.
